A bit of a quiet spot to be stuck to be sure.
Waking up on March 17th, the weather was rubbish as advertised, but we got ourselves ready to leave anyway in case it cleared, or we felt particularly brave later. At a cafe we grabbed breakfast and rang ahead for accommodation. First Makarora, then Lake Hawea. No room anywhere. Meanwhile the lightning came, and the thunder. The weather forecast apps couldn’t make reliable predictions on what the weather would do over the day.
We finally decided staying put was best and checked we could keep last night’s room, which we could. Then just a case of maximising our rest day, ready to do double tomorrow and a big climb over the crown range the day after.
